For 52 years, email has been a cornerstone of communication, but it has also become a primary source of stress and clutter. The modern inbox is a battleground of spam, newsletters, and notifications, leaving users with overwhelming unread counts and a constant feeling of being behind.
We were tasked with designing UltraInbox, a native email client that tackles this problem head-on. The goal was to move beyond conventional solutions and create a truly intelligent inbox by delegating the heavy lifting of organization and management to GPT, allowing users to reclaim their focus and peace of mind.

The core design insight was that the next leap in email productivity isn't just about speed, but about intelligent delegation to AI.
While competitors like Superhuman and Hey focus on speed and manual workflows, our design for UltraInbox centered on cognitive offloading. The design philosophy was to let the user set the strategy (with labels and #tags) and let GPT execute it. This allows for powerful automations like auto-organization, summarization, and replies, which fundamentally reduces the mental load on the user.
This AI-first approach enabled us to design a uniquely calm and focused user interface. With features like 'Focus' for critical tasks and 'Reply Later' for non-urgent items, the design encourages deliberate action over frantic reaction. The UI intentionally avoids stressful elements like bold text and unread counts, reinforcing the core value proposition: a powerful inbox that doesn’t feel overwhelming.

We are proud of how the final design for UltraInbox directly addresses a universal pain point. By integrating powerful AI capabilities into a clean, user-centric interface, we've created a tool that has the potential to fundamentally change a user's relationship with their inbox—from a reactive chore to a managed, calm, and productive space.
